Who I Am...

Britny Sanchez

Hey I'm Britny! I am just a small town girl that grew up being very close to my grandparents and great grandparents. They taught me many things about living such as working hard, being compassionate, and helping others. My love for them developed into a desire to help older people so that they could live longer and happier lives. I went to college and became an Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) so I could work with elders to maintain their independence through strengthening exercises, education of home modifications, adaptive equipment and more! Through my experience with my patients I have also helped many of their caregivers learn techniques to decrease the burden of care and relieve stress. I am the Founder of Older Lives Matter LLC, which provides education on fall prevention, adaptive equipment, healthy eating, motivation, and more!
Why I Had to Develop This Program
Through my work as a home health Occupational Therapy Assistant I have worked with many patients and their caregivers.

I realized that though many caregivers feel that their work is rewarding, many of them experience stress in a variety of forms such as feeling disorganized, not getting enough sleep, back pain, lack of time for themselves, and not getting enough support.

The problem is that many caregivers are so focused on giving the best care they can that they often forget to take care of themselves.

I've worked with caregivers to provide them with techniques to make their lives easier by teaching back prevention strategies, using adaptive equipment to their benefit, how to get a better nights sleep, setting up a daily schedule/routine, exercises they can do in the home, and more!

The caregivers that followed the strategies reported they felt less stress and overall greater happiness. Helping them made me want to create a guide to help other caregivers!

Caregivers often face many new challenges ALL AT ONCE:

Caregivers are often thrust into the caregiver role without time to prepare. The caregiving role can be placed upon someone all at once due to a family member becoming sick, fighting a disease, or becoming injured.

The demands of caregiving are often much greater than anticipated. Caregiving can be exhausting,  physically, emotionally, and financially.

Caregivers often lack support or resources and feel isolated, forgotten or alone.

In 2015 there were an estimated 15.7 million Adult Family Caregivers caring for someone with Alzheimer's disease or other dementia.

Caregivers still have hopes, wants and dreams that they may have had to place on hold indefinitely.

The task of caregiving is often lengthy, in 2015 the average duration of a caregiver's role was 4 years.

Caregivers often only focus on the needs of their loved ones to their own detriment, not seeking their own needed medical care or eating a healthy diet which often lead to stress related disorders, back pain, sleep issues, depression and other long term illnesses.

Many caregivers are unaware of possible services or resources that may be available that could potentially lessen the strain of caregiving.

"My parents sacrificed for me when I was growing up, now it is my turn". I have heard this statement countless times from caregivers, but you DON'T have to suffer or sacrifice in order to be a loving, happy, and effective caregiver!

So I was on a Mission to help as many people as possible that are struggling with these caregiving related issues and help them to withstand the rigors of caregiving so they can THRIVE in the admirable role as a caregiver.

Hope this helps many of you!
